Israel is known as “start-up nation”, most recognized for its innovation. The country holds 6th place in Bloomberg’s Index of 2020’s Top 60 Most Innovative Countries in the World. A possibly less known statistic is that the Israeli medical industry has deeply contributed to this success, as one of its most productive & prosperous industrial sectors when it comes to innovation. With approximately 7,000 active start-ups today, Israel is the world’s leader for number of start-ups per capita and one of the most technologically literate populations in the world. Israel's advanced workforce, along with its numerous foreign high-tech firms and sophisticated research centres, have all benefited the country’s developing high-tech industry. However, maintaining a successful innovative ecosystem certainly requires much more than just start-ups.

Israel is also home to various tech hubs, R&D centers, incubators and multinational corporations, all of which are seeking to assist the energetic local entrepreneurial spirit and knowledge provided by some of Israel’s high-end academic institutions. These include The Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, The Weizmann Institute alongside top hospitals such as Sheba Medical Center and Hadassah, offering companies a successful training ground for tests and clinical trials. Additionally, the Israeli government has done its fair share in promoting large budgets and funds targeted exclusively at tech industry research. Just as important is the private investment community including angel investors, venture capital firms, incubators, innovation hubs, and growth accelerators.

Nearly 2,000 companies operate the healthcare and life science sectors in Israel and there isn’t a doubt that when it comes to medical innovation, Israel is a global powerhouse. Israel is placed second following the U.S. in the number of companies advancing medical technology, with an average of more than 100 new companies each year. With a focus on medical devices, biopharma and digital health, a recent report lead by VC Pitango Capital Partners’ HealthTech fund finds that 250 active companies had raised a total of $6.5 billion.

As for medical devices, Israel is an international leader. The amount of patents granted in the field places Israel as the leading country in patents per capita, and the fourth in total number of patents. Many new medical device start-up companies are created every year, promising to preserve and extend the present growth rate of the field. The long development process of the companies in receiving approval and mass production of a medical device, suggest they are here for the long run.

Additionally, innovation companies with support from the state, attract private investors which brings on additional budgets. All this certainly results in a greater economic boost. It should therefore come to no surprise that more than 40% of Israeli medical device startup companies have turned into successful and profitable companies. We believed that this successful path could continue in the future, especially as Israeli startups and entrepreneurial communities continuously advance.
