In this video, Chinese and Israeli businessmen share their perspectives on navigating the cultural differences that arise when conducting international business trade between China and Israel. For instance, one major point of cultural difference between Israel and China is the Jewish concept of “chutzpah,” or boldness. This value stands in contrast to traditional Chinese values and systems, which emphasize deference to superiors, strong hierarchies, and which often feature rigid rules that can stifle creativity. At the beginning of the video, Mr. Jun Han, the former technology attaché in the Chinese embassy in Israel, considers the benefit of adopting Israeli maxims such as “fear no one” and “don’t be bashful,” while also countering that the Chinese value of patience can be just as and perhaps even more valuable than such maxims. Mr. Han goes on to relate the importance of understanding key cultural differences in Chinese and Israeli workplaces, for instance Israel’s horizontal models of leadership versus strong notions of hierarchy present in Chinese companies. He describes a scenario in which he was invited to give a speech in Israel as a key lecturer. To his surprise and amusement, he was expected to purchase his own cup of coffee at the event using his own money. He concludes that both countries have much to learn from one another, and that in order to promote creativity, Chinese businesses would benefit from less rigid leadership models in the Israeli style. A second interviewer, Mr. Ning Tang, the founder and CEO of CreditEase, states that Chinese tech firms need Israeli creativity, and that Israelis need Chinese business know-how and ability to produce on a mass scale. The video concludes with Asia DirectCapital Chairman, Mr. Gal Dymant, on the cross-cultural importance of strong connections and trustworthy networks – as valuable in China as they are in Israel.
